FIRST ON FOXCongressional Republicans are requesting answers from Alejandro Mayorkas, Homeland Security Secretary. They want to know why the agency won’t make public the numbers of migrants apprehended who have been on the Terrorist Screening Database. This is after DHS claimed that the information was “Law Enforcement Sensitive.”

In a letter addressed to Mayorkas obtained by Fox News, Reps. John Katko (Republican-NY), Clay Higgins (Republican-La.) and August Pfluger (Republican-Texas) stated that “The real purpose of a Law Enforcement Sensitive Label is to prevent harm coming to our police officers and law enforcement-related activity. But it seems like this label is being instead used to preserve the reputation of the current presidential administration.”

For months, the Republicans have been urging the Department of Homeland Security to disclose how many migrants were arrested at the southern border.

It contains InformationAbout the identity of terrorist suspects “known or reasonably believed” to be involved. According to lawmakers, they were given the number of migrants on the TSDB during a confidential briefing. They now wish that the public see the numbers.

In March, Fox News reportedU.S. Border Patrol has taken into custody at least 4 migrants whose names are similar to the terrorist watch list since the start fiscal year. This number could be higher given the huge increase in migrants crossing the southern border, with over 1.7 million encounters in FY 2021.

Rodney Scott, former Chief of Border Patrol has raised alarm about the increasing number of TSDBs crossing the border. He told fellow agents it was at a “level we’ve never seen” before.

“We have terrorist threats we can’t get into in this type of a forum but they are real,” he told Fox News’ Bret Baier in October.

“The Committee’s request for a topline number does not pose a threat to the safety or missions of the honorable officers who are law enforcers. “We believe that this topline number, as promised by Biden’s administration, would be an important move towards transparency, which is still missing,” they state.

Republicans claim that DHS responded to their request only by saying that it was “Law Enforcement Sensitive”. This is a response which the lawmakers accuse of “blatantly sidestepping” our requests for transparency, and not responding to a valid oversight request from Congress.

It requests information on the procedures, protocols and processes used to decide what information can be classified as law enforcement sensitive. The letter also asks for information about the official who makes the final decision on law enforcement sensitive information and additional information regarding the restriction placed on this topline number.

“Specifically why is that topline number considered as Law Enforcement Sensitive and why did the Biden administration reverse the previous administration’s determination that such information was indeed public information?” They ask.

They write that it is crucial for Americans to have an accurate and transparent understanding of threats facing their homeland. It is crucial that politics not block transparency and accountability of DHS. This includes the obligation to make sure that Americans have every resource available to understand threats to their homeland security.
