Elizabeth Drew, a Liberal journalist is under intense fire for a tweet she posted mocking Sir David Amess’s shocking assassination.
Amess was addressing constituents at the Methodist Church Friday night when a man entered his room and repeatedly stabbed Amess. He was 69 years old.
Drew is a MSNBC regular guest whose columns appeared in The New York Times and The Daily Beast as well as Project Syndicate. He took to Twitter amid breaking news to poke fun at Amess.
The perfect name for someone who has been stabbed in the back at a local meeting. Drew wrote that David Amess, a British lawmaker, was killed in an attack while meeting with constituents.
Critics slammed the veteran journalist, aged 85, for sending such a cruel tweet.
“Hoping that this New Yorker veteran tweets to some millennial, as this is absolutely disgusting. It should be taken down”, Tim Graham, NewsBusters’ executive editor, said.

Drew is a well-known journalist who reported on the Watergate scandal, which resulted in the resignation of President Richard Nixon. In recent years, Drew has become a fierce critic of Donald Trump. Drew is a regular guest on “The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell”, and she has also appeared on other MSNBC shows.
Amess had been a member of parliament since 1983 and a member of his current constituency – Southend West in Essex – since 1997.

Following the murder of Amess, the Essex Police issued this statement: “We aren’t looking for anybody else in connection to the incident. We don’t believe there is any ongoing threat to our wider community.”
