On a grey Boston morning, thousands of people gathered at Copley Square to support marathon runners. Many were carrying signs or ringing bells. Many spectators believe that the return of marathon runners is a sign to hope and normalcy.

For runners, last year’s cancellation of the in-person marathon was devastating, although many participated in the virtual run. Friends and family have traveled from all over the country to help their loved ones.

Pam Jordan is the wife and runner Ken Jordan’s spouse. She says she was sad that Ken had to cancel the Boston Marathon last year. However, he did participate in the virtual event and his entire family made it memorable.

My mother taped our driveway to mark the finish line. We even had our very own Heartbreak Hill. It’s amazing that we are back,” she stated.

Many spectators were fascinated by the connection between running and mental illness. Xio Cuba Hidalgo, 43 years old, selected Brookline Center for Community Mental Health for the funding she was raising.

“As many of you know,” she wrote to friends and family, “I have dealt with anxiety & depression since 2014. It was not just because I loved running but for its benefits on my mental and physical health that I discovered my passion for it. This is truly a gift from God.

Castro Hidalgo’s family wore T-shirts with her name and carried signs cheering her on. Her parents even flew from Honduras for Xio’s third marathon.

The men’s wheelchair race began at 8:02 a.m. at the Hopkinton, Massachusetts, start line. A Swiss Paralympian, Marcel Hug won the race. He narrowly missed breaking his own record because he missed a turn. He finished in 1:18:11. The female wheelchair champion is Manuela Schär, also of Switzerland, who finished in one hour, 35 minutes, and 21 seconds.

In the men’s elite division, Benson Kipruto of Kenya finished in two hours, five minutes and 13 seconds. He had previously won the Prague Marathon earlier this year, and the Toronto Marathon last 2018. The women’s elite champion also hails from Kenya. Diani Kipsyogei was finished in just two hours and 24 minutes.
