The administration will announce that President Joe Biden requires all non-resident travellers who cross U.S. Land Borders, including truck drivers and government officials, to get fully vaccinated starting Jan. 22.

According to a senior official in the administration, the White House has shown the requirements for essential travellers in October. They are similar to those in place for leisure travelers earlier in the month, when the U.S. opened its borders for fully-vaccinated citizens.

Officials also stated that essential travelers who travel by ferry must be fully immunized by that date. The official made the statement to The Associated Press under anonymity in order to give a sneak peek at the announcement.

These rules apply to all non-U.S. citizens. American citizens and permanent resident may enter the U.S. without regard to their vaccine status. However, they will face extra testing because officials fear that these people are more likely to contract COVID-19. This is to encourage them to get shots.

To prevent any disruptions among truckers who play a vital role in North American trade, the Biden administration delayed by two months the requirements for essential travellers. It was put into effect Nov. 8, but it has been delayed for more than two years. Essential travelers were able to travel unassisted, even though most trans-border traffic was stopped in the early days of the pandemic.

Norita Taylor spokeswoman for Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association criticized the immunization requirement, calling it an example “how unnecessary government mandates could force experienced owner-operators out of business”

“These regulations are yet another example how unpractical regulations can send safe drivers off of the road,” she stated.

This latest deadline extends beyond what the Biden administration wants to see large companies require employees to get vaccinated and tested every week under an urgent regulation from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. This rule has been delayed due to litigation. However, the White House encourages businesses to establish their own mandates independent of federal regulations in the interest of increasing vaccination.
